How To Speak Icelandic | 20 Common Phrases & Greetings

 I started attending classes in February and have managed to learn a thing or two! Have you ever been to Iceland? Would you like to visit? Are you learning Icelandic right now? Have you already learnt it? Or, are you just curious as to what this language is all about? I would love to know!

So here you have it! 20 Common Phrases & Greetings in Icelandic

1 – Goðan Dag/Daginn = Good Day or Daginn/Day

2 – Hæ/Hæhæ/Halló = Hi/Hihi/Hello

3 – Blessaður/Bless = Be blessed/Bless or Hi/Bye

4 – Takk/Takk Fyrir = Thankyou/Thankyou very much

5  – Já/Nei = Yes/No

6 – Ég heiti ….. = My name is…..

7 – Hvað heitir þú? = What is your name?

8 – Eg er frá….(Englandi) = I am from….. (England)

9 – Þetta er (Robin) = This is (Robin)

10 – Hún/Hann er frá (Frakklandi) = She/He is from France

11 – Talar þú Islensku/Ensku? = Do you speak Icelandic?/English

12 – Nej, ég tala ensku = No, I speak English or Já, ég tala íslensku = yes I speak Icelandic

13 – Nei, ég tala ekki íslensku/Ensku = No, I don’t speak Icelandic/English

14 – hvað segirðu gott? / How are you?

15 – Ég segi allt fínt! en þu? / I am fine, and you? (not sure if it’s a direct translation)

16 – Afsakið/Excuse me and Fyrirgefðu/Sorry

17 – sömuleiðis/Likewise

18 – Sjáumst / See you! or Heyrumst/Let’s be in touch(talk to you later)

19 – Gaman að sjá þig! / Fun to see you

20 – Gott kvöld / Good evening or góða nótt
