LOCATION
- Aruu Falls is located in the northern part of Uganda, in the district of Pader, along the Gulu – Kitgum road.
- It’s about 47 kms from Gulu and 57 kms from Kitgum. If you’re travelling from Kampala city it’s about 386 kms.
- The falls are approximately 30 metres high and are surrounded by lush greenery and beautiful rock formations.
- The falls are an important source of water for the local community, who use it for drinking, washing, and irrigation.
- Aruu Falls is surrounded by a dense forest that is home to a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, baboons, and birds.
- You can enjoy a picnic in the beautiful park area surrounding the falls.
- Though there is water sold here, it would be wise to bring plenty of your own water and snacks. There are generally no food vendors near the falls, so make sure you have everything you need before you set off.
SAFETY
- When accessing the falls by car, a good 4 wheel drive Vehicle is recommended. This is because the road is quite narrow and can be slippery especially when it rains.
- The falls are a popular spot for swimming and water activities, but visitors should be careful as the water can be quite strong.
- The water is suitable for swimming but please be advised, it is at your own risk.
- & bear it in mind that the rocks are slippery, so be ready to take off your shoes and cross the river barefoot.
- This activity – the hike and crossing the river – is not suitable for the elderly, disabled or very young children.
- It’s understandable that you’ll want to bring along your phone, camera, and accessories – I couldn’t leave mine behind.. Please remember to handle those items with care.
HIKING & SIGHTS
- There are several hiking trails around Aruu Falls that offer stunning views of the falls and the surrounding landscape.
- The falls at Aruu get better as your hike progresses.
- Aruu Falls is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Uganda and is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who visit.
ACCOMODATION
- Aruu Falls offers two types of campsites: basic rooms for those who prefer a roof over their heads, and an area for pitching tents for those who enjoy camping.
- There’s also the option to stay at one of the many hotels in either Gulu or Kitgum as they are both a 1 hour drive either way.
You could make Aruu an adventurous day trip or stop off on your way to Kidepo Valley National Park.
ENTRANCE/ACCESS
- Visitors to Aruu falls are Expected to pay entrance fees. International adult visitors are charged worth about 20,000 UGX while East Africans and local Ugandan Adults are charged 10,000 UGX.
- Â From the Main road, Boda bodas (moto bikes) can take you to the 7 km Aruu falls at a cost between 6000 -7000 UGX
