My Hair Routine & Key Products

My hair routine has always been simple and that’s how I like it. I’ve learnt about the things that my hair absolutely loves(water) and what my hair just cant deal with(heat). As contrary as this may sound to the beliefs of many Afro Chicas my hair thrives on water! I’ve had a few big chops now and each time I am asked how my hair grows so fast! Let me just reiterate, it’s water! I big chopped on the 6th of March last year (2014) and it was a decision I made for various reasons including feeling fed up & wanting a change – in short. Big chops are like the start of a new life. I wanted to make sure I didn’t make the mistakes I had previously made. One thing I’ve always done right is frequent shampooing and conditioning. In the first few months after the big chop it’s everyday, then I move on to every two days and eventually every week. I’m at the every week point now and I see it as the final stage.

Before I started using coconut oil and Shea butter on my hair I would never be able to appreciate the smell of my shampoos and conditioners for long, the moisturisers and oils I used contained overpowering fragrances. Now I choose a great smelling shampoo and conditioner, knowing it will last on my hair. Because the scent of virgin coconut oil is mild & pleasant while my Shea butter is also light and unoffensive(unlike the West African Shea variety), the shampoo & conditioner fragrance comes through so well! I apply this mix straight after washing and then twist/Bantu knot. My hair feels super luxurious  the next day!

It only takes a quick whisking of Shea butter & Coconut oil in equal quantities to create a winner, 2 in 1 moisturiser and sealant! I used 1/2 Cup Shea butter & 1/2 Coconut oil to fill a 300ml container.

I use Jamaican black castor oil on my edges and it’s been a great help. This particular bottle was purchased from eBay.
